Food allergy

Do you have a food allergy that cannot be cured?

Some people have a type of allergic reaction to certain foods that only causes symptoms in the mouth and throat. It leads to itching, tingling, and swelling of the mouth, lips and throat. Fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts usually cause this. It can be confused with an extreme form of an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). This is how food allergy manifests itself in adults and children.

It can be serious as swelling in the mouth and throat affects the ability to breathe. Symptoms begin a few minutes after eating and usually disappear completely within an hour.

Important: An ambulance should be called immediately if you feel weak, have difficulty breathing, or feel like your throat is constricting.

Diagnostics and treatment of food allergies in adults and children at MC Altimed

Experienced professionals should be consulted to identify the causes of food allergies. Our Altimed Medical Center practices modern approaches that allow you to painlessly determine what is an allergen for you.

Nevertheless, the main thing that allows our specialists to identify the causes of your allergies is diagnostics using modern equipment.

We use functional screening, Vega-test, to diagnose diseases and determine appropriate treatments.

Functional screening records wave processes in the human body. As a result, the specialist receives a diagram that allows him to choose the most optimal treatment option.

Vegetative resonance testing (ART) is one of the methods of electropuncture and bioresonance diagnostics, with the help of which drug testing is painlessly performed.

Selection of products without using them inside, by scanning for the presence of enzymes and the presence of an allergic reaction.

Now we are using a modern apparatus, which is an electronic allergen laboratory with a database of more than 600 allergens and allergoplexes (digital copies of allergy markers).

This diagnostic method has proven to be very effective.

What is food allergy?

There are different types of food allergies, depending on which part of the immune system is responding. Acute, sudden reactions are usually caused by an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). These are the so-called IgE-mediated reactions. As a result of these reactions, various chemicals are formed, including histamine. Histamine causes many allergy symptoms, so antihistamines can be used to treat some allergic reactions.

There are also non-IgE-mediated reactions that tend to be more delayed and less severe. In these reactions, symptoms are not caused by IgE. Instead, other parts of the immune system, such as a type of white blood cell called T cells, are causing the problem. Common reactions include skin problems such as rashes and eczema, as well as irritable bowel syndrome.

It is also possible to have mixed reactions.

Food allergy does not coincide with food intolerance, and the symptoms of the former overlap with those of other diseases. Therefore, it is important that your illness is confirmed by an appropriate assessment by a specialist.

Food allergens are usually naturally occurring proteins in foods or derivatives thereof that cause abnormal immune responses. Food allergies in children can be temporary. Fortunately, many children outgrow these diseases by the time they are 5-7 years old. On the other hand, food allergens: seafood, peanuts and hazelnuts, can provoke later and lifelong development.

Signs of food allergies

Allergic reactions to food vary greatly: there may be irritable bowel syndrome or skin rashes. At times, more serious, life-threatening asthma and anaphylaxis develop.

Generally, many adverse food reactions are collectively referred to as food allergies. However, true food allergies represent only a small fraction of the diverse individual adverse reactions to food, which also include food intolerances.

Some patients may also experience mild allergic symptoms to fresh fruits and vegetables such as kiwi, apples, peaches, melons, pineapples, and papaya. This condition, known as oral allergy syndrome or pollen-food syndrome, is usually associated with a primary allergy to pollen (such as birch, vulture, or grass) or latex. In these people, the immune system reacts to food proteins as if they were pollen, and symptoms are usually limited to the mouth and throat.

When should you contact MC Altimed?

Food allergy symptoms – mild to moderate include:

  1. Swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
  2. Hives on the skin.
  3. Abdominal pain or vomiting.

Food allergy Manifestations of a severe reaction (anaphylaxis) to foods include:

  1. Difficulty / noisy breathing.
  2. Swelling of the tongue.
  3. Swelling / tightness in the throat.
  4. Difficulty speaking or hoarse voice.
  5. Wheezing or persistent cough.
  6. Constant dizziness or collapse.

Sometimes there is a latent food allergy. Less common symptoms of food allergies include infant colic, reflux of stomach contents, eczema, chronic diarrhea, and developmental disabilities (intestinal allergies in children).

Instead of assuming that it is, contact our specialists at MC Altimed to rule out or confirm food allergies. It is important that you know how to manage reactions if they occur, but also what to avoid so as not to provoke them.

It is important to understand that the symptoms of food allergies in children may not be obvious or they may not be able to communicate them because they do not know the right words to describe how they are feeling.

For example, a child with a food allergy might say something like “this is too hot” or “my tongue is thick” when they eat trigger foods. An infant’s food allergy is manifested in the following way: the child may become very fussy or irritable, have stomach pain or diarrhea, and be unable to explain what is going on.

Babies and toddlers can only speak a few words, if any, further emphasizing the need for parents to be on the lookout for potential allergy symptoms, which may differ in children at this age.

Again, don’t wait for symptoms to subside or get worse to react. A child’s food allergy is very serious. Call us right away if your child develops swelling in the face (food allergy on the face), mouth or tongue, or if he or she has trouble breathing.

If you are concerned that your child may have food allergies or are at risk of food allergies, please schedule an appointment with us.
